My Students

About once a month I try get a variety of my students together (about a dozen) for a ‘ little big band’ session aka ‘The KJB’ (The Kerensky Jazz Band). This is aimed more at my beginner/improver level students. As students develop and when a place is available they normally join the senior jazz band I formed back in 2005, a separate link about this group is available here - www.mjbo.co.uk.

The band formula usually consists of alto and tenor saxophone, cornet or trumpet, trombone and a rhythm section made up of bass guitar, piano, drums and electric guitar. My band library is very varied to cater for all tastes, Jazz, Swing, Blues, Rock, Latin and even Pop. These group sessions have proved very popular and are designed to encourage my students to develop their musicianship within a real band setting; also the band puts on one or two public concerts each year.

Once students develop their foundation skills of playing their chosen musical instrument, many go on to take graded exams in either jazz or classical performance with London College of Music or Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. I’ve helped some students attain grade 8 and others have gone even further to study music at degree level or have become semi-professional musicians.
